Illinois EPA Overview
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) regulates car washes primarily through wastewater discharge standards and hazardous material handling. Operations must comply with the Illinois Environmental Protection Act and related administrative code.
Wastewater Discharge Requirements
- NPDES permit required if discharging to surface waters
- Pretreatment required before discharge to municipal sewers
- Oil/water separators required to remove petroleum contaminants
- Total suspended solids, pH, and oil/grease limits must be met
- Permit applications through IEPA or local POTW
Chemical Storage & Handling
