Define the denominator before comparing a membership conversion rate. Paid new members divided by eligible offers is different from sign-ups divided by all wash visits, and trial accounts are different from successful recurring collections.

Use definitions the payment system can reproduce
Decide what counts as an eligible offer, paid signup, promotional trial, renewal and cancellation. Exclude existing members from a retail-to-membership offer denominator. Separate new registrations from accounts whose first charge actually succeeded.
Use consistent dates and locations. A chain-wide figure can conceal one site’s promotion, downtime or weak retention. Document how the report handles duplicate plates, multi-vehicle plans and failed payments.
| Illustrative calculation | Inputs | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Paid offer conversion | 36 first paid signups ÷ 240 eligible offers | 15% |
| First renewal collection | 28 successful renewals ÷ 36 signup cohort | 77.8% |
| Interpretation | Fictional planning numbers | Neither is an Illinois benchmark. |
Follow a cohort past the signup
Measure subsequent successful bills, voluntary cancellations, failed payments, refunds and visits. A discount can increase registrations while lowering first-cycle contribution. Pair conversion with retention and realized collection per account.
Account for the labor, chemical, utility and capacity implications of member visits. Recurring billing does not make every additional visit costless. Compare member usage and contribution with the site’s operating records.
Use experiments rather than promised uplifts
Test a clear offer with defined staff training and a fixed measurement period. Record the base offer and comparison offer, then evaluate paid collections and complaints. Do not change price, promotion and sales script simultaneously if you want to know what caused a result.
No locally validated benchmark dataset is asserted here. When a vendor supplies one, request the sample, period, format and denominator before incorporating it into the purchase valuation.
